The Department of Defense announced grants from the Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) for $13,792,851 to Travis Unified School District to renovate and expand Scandia Elementary School at Travis Air Force Base, California; and $40,301,825 to Clover Park School District to replace Evergreen Elementary School at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
The Travis Unified School District will manage the Scandia school project totaling $17,241,064 consisting of $13,792,851 in federal grant funds and $3,448,213 in non-federal matching funds to renovate and expand Scandia Elementary School in order to address the capacity and facility condition deficiencies that placed this school on the Deputy Secretary of Defense “Public Schools on Military Installations Priority List” (Priority List) at #24. This school will serve over 500 military connected students in grades kindergarten through sixth.
The Clover Park School District will manage the Evergreen school project totaling $50,377,281 consisting of $40,301,835 in grant funds and $10,075,456 in non-federal matching funds to replace Evergreen Elementary School in order to address the capacity and facility condition deficiencies that placed this school on the Deputy Secretary of Defense “Public Schools on Military Installations Priority List” (Priority List) at #29. This school will serve 761 military connected students, including 156 special education students with severe physical disabilities, in grades kindergarten through fifth.
Funding for these grants is provided under the Department’s Public Schools on Military Installations Program. OEA, in making these funds available, must give priority consideration to those military installations with schools having the most serious capacity or facility condition deficiencies, as determined by the Priority List. Previously, OEA awarded school construction grants to 19 of the top 30 schools on the Priority List. A multi-disciplined Federal Evaluation Team, with membership from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, the military services, U.S. Department of Education, and OEA reviewed the school projects to ensure the awards appropriately address the noted capacity and facility condition deficiencies.
The remaining unobligated funds appropriated for this program to assist other local education agencies in addressing the most serious capacity or facility condition deficiencies at public schools located on military installations may be subject to future sequestration reductions.
